Songkran 2566

12. April 2023

สงกรานต์ (Songkran), the Thai new year. Water is poured over the hands of elders as a blessing, and over everyone else for the pleasure of it.

Songkran was the official new year until 1888. The date moved to 1 April, then in 1940 to 1 January — but the festival stayed where it was, in the hottest part of April.

2566 by the Buddhist calendar; 2023 by the Western one.
